Spring sports events are cancelled due to inclement weather

Several spring sports events have been rescheduled or cancelled due to unexpected weather for this time of the year.

The rainy and cold spring season has put a damper on many of the boys tennis events, junior Joe Vincent said.

“The poor weather has made me more hungry to play well on the few days of good weather,” Vincent said. “Aside from that, match cancellations are annoying.”

The Blue Valley Southwest and Shawnee Mission Northwest varsity duals which were both rescheduled from earlier in the season have been rained out for a second time. Junior Varsity duals against Lawrence Free State and Gardner-Edgerton were cancelled as well.

Vincent said that the weather has prevented him from putting the most into the season.

“The worst thing about events getting rained out has been not being able to apply the skills learned in practice as much as I would like to,” Vincent said.

The baseball team has experienced difficulties with the weather as well. They have had multiple games canceled. Their game that was originally scheduled for Thursday, April 25 was then played on Tuesday  causing them to play four consecutive games in two days.

“[The weather] changed the way we appraoched the games we had to play against Lansing,” senior Zack Stinnett said. “They rescheduled the games ahead of time because of the upcoming weather.”

The varsity boys golf team has missed three tournaments due to inclement weather comditions, head coach Adam Wessel said there has not been a negative impact on the team.

“The bad weather hasn’t really had much of an impact because all of the rescheduled dates have been on dates where we just had practice scheduled.” Wessel said.

The girls soccer team has had many rescheduled and one cancelled game this year. Games against Shawnee Mission North, Bishop Ward, Olathe North, and De Soto will all be rescheduled.

Although the weather hasn’t been ideal for any of the spring sports, sophomore goalkeeper Kaia Minter said the girls soccer team is accomplishing a lot despite the cold conditions.

“It’s been tough for us with the weather, considering soccer isn’t really the best sport to play in a gym. But we’ve been working really hard with what we have, and we’re actually doing quite well,” Minter said. “Several games have been rescheduled, but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. We can’t control the weather, but we’ve been doing our best to work with it.”
