Volleyball defeats Piper and achieves KVL championship

Emotions at Senior Night make for an exciting game

The volleyball team defeated the Piper Pirates and won the KVL championship for the second consecutive year at its Senior Night match on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The Jaguars won all three sets 25-12, 25-18 and 25-18 respectively.

With emotions at an all-time high, senior libero Abby Ford said the team struggled with intensity, but was pleased the team was victorious in its last home game.

“[This game] was a little more exciting knowing I was playing much harder, because it’s my last time playing here,” Ford said.

Compared to the rest of the season, senior right hitter Alexis Crispin said this game did not bring much difficulty as the first half of the season.

“This game has been pretty similar to the second half of our season, because the first half we played more of our really tough competition,” Crispin said.

The substate tournament begins on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Topeka-Seaman and state tournament will begin on Friday, Nov. 1 at the Topeka Expo Center. Crispin said the team will give its best effort in the substate and, if they qualify, state tournaments.

“State and substate are going to be completely different games. We’re going to have to play our butts off, and I think [Senior Night] got us really pumped since there’s six of us seniors,” Crispin said. “We know this is it for us so we have to play our hardest and see where it takes us.”
