Blog: Our eight seconds of fame

Austin speaking:

Today, for the first time ever, Mill Valley filmed a school-wide lip dub. A lip dub is basically when all of the different sports, activities and clubs of the school lip sync to a song, which is filmed in a single take. Filming it was really fun and I’m eager to see how it turns out. Although everyone in a group got to participate (along with students who aren’t in any group), representatives were asked to act as the leaders of their group. Practices for the lip dub began about over a month ago, and us three newspaper editors-in-chief, along with the yearbook editors-in-chief, had been planning since then how us journalists were going to shine in our film debut (look, Ma, I’m famous!). We were responsible for coming up with something fun for our group to do when the camera panned by us and communicating that to all of the participants. I think our part turned out well; we made some posters and used our super cool, customized foam fingers that our adviser, Kathy Habiger, got us at last year’s journalism banquet. Instead of putting the attention on other people, us journalists got to have the attention on us for once. Well, for a whole eight seconds at least.

Kristina speaking:

The journalism staff finally got to show off our talented rave dance moves at the school-wide lip dub. As Austin explained above, the video productions staff put together a lip dub and the journalism staff got our eight seconds of fame. I think this production is an excellent showcase of all of the school’s clubs, groups and students. Everyone deserved the small recognition.

Hanna speaking:

When I first heard that we were going to do a school lip dub, I was skeptical. I wondered why we would copy another school or feel the need to film our school spirit. But when the cameras got rolling, I was completely on board. It was great to see everyone decked out in spirit wear and actively participating in an assembly. Although I haven’t seen the final footage, I know the journalism program was the best group in the lip dub. Clearly, our foam fingers were no match for the competition. Oh, and make sure you keep an eye out for more coverage of the lip dub. But I’ll stop there, I wouldn’t want to give anything away.
