Musically, these last few weeks have been hard for me. Despite some big music news, like Coldplay preparing to release what has potential to be its last album, or Missy Elliott coming out of the woodwork for a new single, it seems like people only want to talk about Adele. I get it, Adele is talented, and I bet “25” is a great album, but her music has never really been my cup of tea. So, instead of talking about Adele, I’m going to talk about five other female pop artists and the amazing songs they’ve released as of late.

Elle King: “Ex’s & Oh’s”

Not to sound pretentiously hipster, but I’ve known about Elle King and this song for an awfully long time. King’s raspy voice is emotional and powerful, and this song never gets old. I’m glad she finally broke into pop radio with “Ex’s & Oh’s,” as King’s rock-oriented style provides a nice alternative to mainstream pop music. (I sound so hipster here, but I love pop music, I promise.) And, she plays banjo, which makes her even more awesome.

Ellie Goulding: “On My Mind”

Sometimes, I forget how much I love Ellie Goulding, but it’s been hard to lately. It’s hard to believe she already released “Love Me Like You Do” and “Powerful” (with Major Lazer and Tarrus Riley) this year, and “On My Mind” continues her trend of great electropop music. The song features Goulding nearly rapping in the verses, and it has a fantastic drop after the chorus. Oh, and as if it needed to be said, Goulding is a fabulous vocalist as well, with her unique tone and great higher register.

Daya: “Hide Away”

I had no idea who Daya was before I wrote this blog post, but I had definitely heard her single, “Hide Away,” many times. From what I’ve found, it’s her first and only single, off her debut extended play, “Daya.” Daya is actually younger than me, but way more talented — “Hide Away” features vocals that could go toe-to-toe with any other artist on this list, and she already knows how to perform well live too. “Hide Away” is fantastically produced as well, and has everything it needs to be a huge hit.

Alessia Cara: “Here”

Alessia Cara has been one of the most talked about pop newcomers lately, and rightfully so. Surprisingly, she released “Here” in late April, but it didn’t become a hit for a while. Now, though, “Here” is an anti-party anthem, with Cara’s lyrics talking about a disdain for teen party culture. Cara delivers her message well, singing smoothly against a minimalistic alternative R&B backing in one of the best singles of the year.

Ariana Grande: “Focus”

If you didn’t know that I love Ariana Grande, then you have some Music Man homework to do. Her latest single, “Focus,” had to grow on me a bit, but her recent American Music Awards performance of the song sold me on how great it actually is. Grande delivers with her signature, belt-heavy singing, and Jamie Foxx’s uncredited vocals in the chorus make the song interesting. The accompanying brass section is a welcome change, and if “Focus” is indicative of Grande’s to-be-released third album, “Moonlight,” then I can’t to hear it.

Here’s a bonus: “The Wiz Live!” premieres this Thursday, Dec. 3, on NBC, and features a cast including more amazing women of pop music like Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Amber Riley and Uzo Aduba, along with newcomer Shanice Williams. Whether it takes that, or any of these songs, to stop people from talking about Adele doesn’t really matter to me — I’m just ready to hear about other music.
