Swift spends early mornings hunting turkey, deer, pheasant and quail

Gracie Pringle, Guest reporter

How did you get interested in hunting?

My uncle talked to me about taking me hunting in 2010 around Thanksgiving.

What exactly do you hunt?

Everything that walks in my yard, including turkey, deer, pheasant and quail.

What kind of requirements do you need to hunt?

You need to have your hunter’s safety license and a tag for everything you hunt.

Who do you normally hunt with?

Brady Garrison, and also a company run by a guy named Ross called South East Kansas Outfitters where I get to hunt free.

Can you describe to me a normal hunting experience?

Usually I get a hotel room with Ross the night before, and then we wake up and go to the gas station for food, bug spray, and anti- smell spray. Then we go through scenarios with decoys, sneak in at 5:30 a.m., get set up, and stay until about 11:45 a.m., and after we always go get lunch.

What do you wear when you hunt?

Everything camp: mask, pants, shirt, eye black, boots and sometimes even a hat.

What equipment do you take hunting?

Shooting supplies, camo, decoys and a fold up blind.

Where do you go hunting?

Fredonia County and Pittsburg, Kansas.

What season is the best for hunting?

I like going hunting year-round, but spring is the best because everything is just starting to come out.

Tell me why you hunt?

The thrill you get from hunting, also how fun it is.

What has hunting taught you?

Food comes from somewhere, and you have to get it somehow.
