Preparing for his first time to ever kick during a varsity game, sophomore receiver Connor Mills could feel the sweat on his brow. What Mills described as the “pregame jitters” gave him the extra drive to complete a successful kick.
Mills was given a shot at kicking kickoffs for varsity on Friday, Sept. 23 at the game against Bishop Ward High School.
“I like that with my kick, I can set the tone for the game,” Mills said.
While senior kicker Andrew Wesp kicks for a majority of the varsity teams’ extra points, Mills knows he has to be prepared at all times to step in. Mills has played junior varsity receiver and kicker and suits up for varsity as a receiver this season, while simultaneously training as replacement varsity kicker.
“I go to zero hour every day, I’ve been working hard, and I’ve been committed since day one,” Mills said.
As Mills holds a junior varsity kicking record of extra points 7 out of 9, he hopes to continue a kicking position on varsity.
“I hope that the coaches see I have a lot of potential and that I’m ready to start varsity at any time,” Mills said.
