At the Sunflower League meet on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday Feb. 7 the boys swim team performed well with sophomore Cole Hansen breaking a school record in the 200 meter freestyle.
Hansen placed second in the 200 meter freestyle and broke the school record with a time of 1:50.31, which has been a goal of his.
“[Breaking the record] felt pretty good,” Hansen said. “That’s what I’ve been working for since last year and I was working for it this year, that was my main goal.”
For Hansen the biggest contributor to his success was having a good mindset.
“I just worried about what I can do,” Hansen said. “I didn’t worry about other people and then when I was swimming, I tried to race the other people. Before I swam, I was like ‘This is my race not somebody else’s race.’”
Junior Lucas Agre also performed well placing eighth in the 200 meter freestyle and fourth in the 100 meter butterfly. While there can be some added pressure when competing at Sunflower League meets, Agre tries to not let that impact his performance.
“I try to ignore [the pressure], there’s a little bit more,” Agre said. “I think the main pressure just comes from trying to get your goals.”
Hansen qualified for state with his 200 freestyle and has learned a lot over the course of the season that he can carry with him for the upcoming state tournament.
“I learned to be patient, because I wasn’t really doing that well in the 200 free and then I dropped a lot of time,” Hansen said.
The boys team will compete at the state tournament on Friday Feb. 20 and Saturday Feb. 21.
