Seven questions with band teacher Jaimie Shores

What is it like being a new teacher?

It’s very overwhelming and there’s a lot of new names to learn. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had, and it’s also very rewarding.

How did you feel before and after the Emporia competition?

Before I felt nervous. After I was so proud, happy and thought we did well.

What’s your biggest challenge as a new teacher?

Keeping up with lesson plans, keeping everything straight and dealing with the administration.

What was your job before becoming a teach/band director?

I substituted, taught and worked at a community center.

What was your first day of school like?

It was exciting, scary and fun.

What do you like about being a teacher/band director?

Every day it feels like I’m not going to work. I like to see people loving to play music.

Which section do you work with the most during rehearsals?

At first it was with the drumline. For the Silver Band marching show songs I mostly work with the flutes and clarinets, but I keep my eyes on the drumline.
