The junior varsity and varsity Scholars Bowl teams have kicked off their seasons strong, having competed in a combined total of seven meets—four by the junior varsity team and three by the varsity team.
So far, varsity has taken fourth place in both of their meets at Bonner Springs High School, and junior varsity has taken fourth at their meet at De Soto High School and second in their meet at Bonner Springs High School.
Scholars Bowl coach Tina Keith described the early season as both challenging and rewarding as the teams adjust to this year’s competition.
“This season’s been good. We just got started last week, both JV and Varsity have had two or three meets,” Keith said. “The first part of the season is kind of a challenge, because you’re still trying to get back into tournaments and how they work, and kind of feel out the competition. But so far, it’s been a really positive experience.”
Throughout the early half of the season, Scholars Bowl coaches have already reported trends of steady growth and improvement within both teams. These improvements have been recognized by Scholars Bowl team members, too, such as sophomore Jack Moulin.
“The team has just refined its knowledge in many topics through practice after school,” Moulin said. “Classes play a larger role in gaining the knowledge needed for answering questions, so the passing of time allows for more topics to be covered.”
Throughout their productive season, both teams have formulated their set of goals for this year, especially regarding the junior varsity team members, according to Keith.
“For junior varsity, our goal is to build up our replacements for next year, because all the varsity members this year are graduating,” Keith said. “Next year will be a year of rebuilding. We really want to build up the skills of the junior varsity players who move on to varsity.”
