The Relay for Life of Jaguar Nation met at the school, which was closed to students Monday Jan. 19, to create their annual Purple Bomb where students help decorate the main hallway to advertise Relay for Life.
Junior Taleen Elkhatib, the chair who oversees the decorations committee, explains that the primary goal of Purple Bomb is to remind the student body to join a group to manage a fundraising table at the main event, which will take place on Mar. 28. The registration form for team captains is due on Friday Jan. 23.
“We decorate the whole school to make people aware of Relay for Life and team sign-up, so they can create booths and carnival games,” Elkhatib said.
Sophomore member Ainsly Leithead enjoyed adding streamers, balloons and signs to the area around the main entrance because the work aims for something greater than just adding embellishments to the school.
“It’s nice because you’re doing it for a purpose…raising money for the American Cancer Society, which helps families and those who are fighting cancer,” Leithead said.
The selection of decorations used contains symbolism that reflects this mission. Balloons with neon lights and streamers that share the color of highlighters encourage brightness among those supporting the cause.
“The theme for this year is ‘Glow for a Cure,’” Elkhatib said. “So our slogan is, ‘We shine so cancer can’t.’”
