This week, Quiz Bowl traveled to De Soto High School, Maranatha Christian Academy and Eudora High School to compete in junior varsity and varsity tournaments.
On Monday, the varsity team placed second at De Soto. On Tuesday, the team traveled to Maranatha Christian Academy to compete in the junior varsity tournament against 14 schools, however they did not place. On Wednesday, the varsity team scored 135 points overall at Eudora, but did not place. Sophomore Rhiannon O’Brien and seniors Nick Wilson, Madeline Grube and Samantha Myers competed in that tournament.
Assistant coach Alyssa Meyer is satisfied with the team’s success so far in the season.
“We’ve been doing really well,” Meyer said. “There have been several wins. It’ll be interesting to see how we compete in varsity [for the remainder of the season].”
O’Brien competed in the tournaments on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“[What I took away from the tournaments] is that we need more than four members competing at varsity,” O’Brien said. “It always affects us [when we are short on members] because when it comes to varsity, it’s a lot more of what you know and how much you know verses how fast you can answer.”
Grube, who participated in the varsity tournament on Wednesday at Eudora, agrees that there is room for improvement, but believes that team has done well overall.
“I think we need to improve on speaking up and being confident in our answers,” Grube said. “Overall, though, I think we work well as a team and we compensate for each other’s weaknesses.”
