I’m going to be honest with you guys. After only three weeks of constant baking and blogging, I’ve found myself a bit short on funds for buying my necessary ingredients, and not having a part-time job doesn’t help. That’s why this week, the recipe only has four base ingredients. Now, of course, you could always make some of these layers from scratch, but I didn’t have the time or money to do that, and I’m sure many of you don’t usually either.

On top of all of that, most of you have probably heard of this week’s recipe before, but by a different name. If you know the name, then you know why I changed the name to Breakup Brownies. If you haven’t heard of this sweet treat before, then once you taste this decadent, layered dessert, you’ll surely understand why it’s named the way it is (hint: it’s exactly what you’d want to eat after a devastating breakup … or after school if you’re one of those people).

Now enough chit-chat. I’m not going to keep you waiting.

Breakup Brownies

Start to finish: 40 minutes

Servings: 16 brownies per 9-by-9-inch pan

Here’s what you’ll need:

1-2 rolls chocolate chip cookie dough (depending on how thick you want the layer)

1 package Mega-Stuf Oreos

1 batch brownie batter

¼ cup store bought or homemade caramel sauce

Here’s the fun part:

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

Line a 9-by-9-inch baking pan with tin foil and then spray the tin foil with a light coat of nonstick baking spray.

Oreos are pressed into cookie dough to ensure even baking.

Open the cookie dough and press into the bottom of the baking pan, creating the first layer for the brownies.

Layer as many Oreos as possible on top of the cookie dough, pressing them into the dough slightly. Do not overlap the — only one layer is needed.

Pour the prepared brownie batter on on top of the oreo layer, using the back of a greased rubber spatula to spread it out evenly.

Bake the brownies for 30-35 minutes. Test to see if the center is done by poking a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean, the brownies are done.

Let the brownies cool. Then, drizzle the caramel sauce over the brownies while they’re still in the pan.

After cutting the brownies, every layer can be clearly seen.

Here are some tips:

  • Make sure you check with a toothpick to see if the brownies are done the first time you check them; when I made them I took them out to early and half the brownie batter wasn’t cooked through (whoops)
  • Serve the brownies a la mode by putting a scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream on top
  • Add ¼ cup Nutella to the brownie batter before you pour it because Nutella makes everything taste better

I can guarantee you these brownies are going to change your life. Possibly your weight too, but that’s beside the point. All of the layers are soft and chewy, regardless of what you may think, so go and get baking, fellow foodies.
