National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society held their annual induction ceremonies on Tuesday, Oct. 19 and Wednesday Oct. 20, respectively.

For NHS, the induction included all of its usual activities ranging from a candle ceremony to the explanation of the society’s four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Senior and NHS president Allison Seck elaborated that they hosted a “cookie reception afterward in the commons.”

The SNHS ceremony included many similar activities, with a mother candle and an oath recited by all members of the society. It was unique in the sense that it was conducted entirely in Spanish.

Senior and SNHS president Grace Emerson, believes this was “a pretty cool thing, especially for the parents and siblings who attended the ceremony who aren’t really exposed to Spanish.”

SNHS sponsor and Spanish teacher Edith Paredes, agreed the ceremony went well, saying that “Every detail and minute of the ceremony was under control.”

Looking ahead, both NHS and SNHS already have many interesting activities on their schedules for the year.

For SNHS, many ideas for activities are in the works right now, including a donut fundraiser. However, it has been pushed back to the Spring for the time being due to scheduling conflicts, so the group will currently stick to its typical volunteering, according to Emerson.

NHS, on the other hand, has already had a few school-wide activities and has even more in the near future.

“This week we are partnering with StuCo for Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat, a canned food drive,” Seck said.

For junior Sarah Johnston, SNHS volunteer coordinator and new NHS inductee, both honor societies provide ways to further knowledge and learning in new ways. Johnston wanted to be part of a group ”that focused on both academics and good character.”
