Junior golfer seeks to lead younger team

Since the summer before her freshman year, junior Hadley Tharp has been playing golf.

“I started playing with my brother and my dad,” Tharp said. “I enjoyed it, so I decided to try out [for the team].”

Though the team is young and from different schools, Tharp believes the players from Mill Valley High School and De Soto High School will do well.

“The freshmen from De Soto are pretty good, but we don’t have any seniors,” Tharp said.

Being one of the oldest players, Tharp has goals for the team and herself.

“Personally, I’d like to break 100,” Tharp said. “For the team, I want people to go to state. I want the whole team to go to state.”

Most recently, the varsity team got fourth place at the Piper Invitational. Tharp feels that doing well in tournaments is just as rewarding as meeting goals.

“It feels good when I hit a good tee shot or sink a long putt,” Tharp said.

Overall, Tharp enjoys playing golf. She hopes to continue playing after high school.

The next varsity tournament is the Spring Hill Invitational at the Paola Country Club on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.
