Interstate 35 makes Kansas City a convenient hub for drug traffickers

The recently released results of a federal study determined that Kansas City is an ideal location for drug smugglers bringing drugs such as heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and some methamphetamines.

The study’s maps show that Kansas City is a convenient location due to the presence of I-35. Mike Oyler, an agent for the FBI who focuses on drug investigations in Kansas and Missouri, agrees with the study’s results.

“Kansas City is a hub,” Oyler said in an interview with the Kansas City Star. “It’s like a trucking business. You have two of the biggest interstates in the country converging here.”

The maps present an official statement that Kansas City contains both a significantly-sized drug market and an important distribution point for drugs being sold north and east of the city. They were released as part of the 2011 National Drug Threat Assessment, an annual study conducted by the National Drug Intelligence Center.
