Half-day finals schedule should be implemented

During the StuCo meeting on Thursday, Nov. 29, members were asked to vote on whether or not they supported having half-day finals in the coming years. As a member of StuCo, I think that this is one of the most important topics we have discussed in a long time. It’s time for the district to implement half-day finals.

There were three different options proposed at the meeting. The first option entailed having three half days and one full day of school with two finals per day and a 30-minute study period in between. The second option was to have two half days and two full days of school and the last option was to have three full days and one half day. On the half days, the teachers would be available for students to get help after school.

All but one StuCo member voted on having three half day finals. I voted for the first option. In my opinion, the 30-minute study period in between finals would be a perfect amount of time to review and rest. Since StuCo represents the student body of the school, it is apparent that most students would love the first option.

During finals week now we have long study periods that are unneccessary and come with distractions. You have to sit by people who might not take finals seriously and over-cram the block before your finals. I believe it would be better if we had half-day finals because of what we would earn from the extra time. You could create a study group outside of school or catch up on some sleep. Teachers could hold study sessions, and we would have more time for personal help. Overall, I believe half days during finals week are the better idea for students.
