From Dec. 2 through 5, StuCo members visited several seminar classrooms to deliver carol grams, a new holiday initiative in which they sang Christmas songs and handed out small bags of candy to students.
This marks the first year StuCo has organized the activity, and according to junior and StuCo member Reese Miller, it’s something they hope to continue doing in the future.
“This is the first year we’ve done something like this, and it’s definitely something I’d like to continue,” Miller said. “It’s a very fun activity and it’s such a great way to spread Christmas spirit throughout the school.”
Students who received carol grams seem to share similar enthusiasm. Junior Josie Danielson, who received one Thursday Dec. 4, felt the surprise made the moment more memorable.
“Although I was a little surprised, it was definitely really fun,” Danielson said. “It brings a lot of Christmas spirit to Mill Valley and on the receiving end of it, I really liked seeing all the carolers and realizing they were for me. It was also really funny hearing my friends singing for me, and not knowing they were coming made it a lot more shocking.”
According to Miller, the experience is also fun from the caroler’s perspective.
“Handing out the carol grams and singing is so fun,” Miller said. “I loved seeing all the students’ reactions because they don’t really expect it at all, and a lot of the students receiving carol grams are my friends, so I get to see all their reactions too.”
Danielson describes her initial reaction, explaining how even though she was caught off guard, it became a really memorable experience.
“I was very surprised,” Danielson said. “It was a little embarrassing at first with a bunch of people singing around you in a silent classroom. But then, I thought it was very funny, and I played into it a lot.”
Miller explains how the variety of reactions was one of the most entertaining parts of the experience.
“A lot of students have varying reactions,” Miller said. “They’re either a little bit uncomfortable, or they’re super energetic and go along with it and start to kind of sing with us. I really enjoyed seeing how everyone took it because it made it a lot more fun, and I’m really excited to see if we can make this a tradition, and do it next year as well.”
