With the first week of December rolling around, we are finally getting into what I would call “winter weather.” This is 30 degree temperatures, hats, coats, mittens, everything. And for unlucky dog owners like me who do not have a fenced-in yard, this means suffering out in the cold during walks just to get exercise in. Fortunately, there are other ways to keep your dog active without losing a toe to frostbite, and here are some tips.

First, practice new tricks indoors. Although rolling over and shaking paws doesn’t compare to the exercise from a walk, learning new tricks can help stimulate both your dog’s mind and body. Plus, this will help them get some energy out so they don’t start to suffer from cabin fever. PetMD suggests limiting training time to 15 minutes per session. Any more would really just tire out your dog and make the situation less enjoyable.

If you have the money, agility classes are a great way to keep your dog in shape. There’s plenty of running, jumping and leaping to satisfy your dog’s needs, plus you get some bonding time. Some classes are offered indoors, while others are not. In the Kansas City area, agility classes can be held at Beyond the Dog near the Plaza and Newman’s Dog Training in Westport. Another option could be to take your pet to doggy daycare, where they’d get plenty of exercise and social interaction.

If all else fails, simply pack on the layers and rough it out in the cold. Make sure to protect your dog’s paws from harsh salt by putting on booties, as well as a coat for the wind. For a more fashionable look, sweaters are always a fabulous option. Enjoy the cold and snuggle up with your dog this winter. See you next time.
