Brodcast classes teach elementary students

Both Broadcast and Video Productions classes will be helping the entire fifth grade class of Prairie Ridge Elementary School in the coming weeks to create newscasts. The class’ first day was Friday, Feb. 24, and they will come at least three more times.

The project involves helping the students set up and record newscasts that will be played at Prairie Ridge. The third graders have already recorded their production stories this is the second year for the program.

“The [fifth graders] love it, they love to see the technology,” broadcast teacher Cindy Swartz said. “They always comment on the green screen.”

Senior Ryan Hannah also knows the fifth graders enjoy the experience.

“They get to go through all this while they’re young,” Hannah said. “Hopefully they’ll take this class when they’re in high school and we can expand the program.”

Swartz loves the opportunity it gives to the Broadcast and Video Productions students as well.

“They have to direct the students,” Swartz said. “They have the responsibility to be the teacher.”
