Broadcast students win competition

MVTV seniors Tori Couts, Cassie Gerhart, Tenille Iskra, Hayley Lollar and Kaitlin Rolig won the Grand Champion Award for their broadcast entry in the 2010 Kansas State Fair Scholastic Press Corps Competition.

For the contest, held in Hutchinson, students were given two story prompts and their choice of two to three more stories to cover. MVTV defeated students from Chaparral High School, the defending champions for the last two years. They will receive $100 for the broadcast program in addition to individual awards.

It was awesome we have never won first place,” senior Hayley Lollar said. “We’ve been to other competitions and won little awards but nothing like this.”

Broadcast teacher Cindy Swartz thought that the experience itself was rewarding being that the seniors were not used to the Western Kansas atmosphere of the fair.

“I was very pleased,” Swartz said.
