“There has been an awakening… have you felt it?”

Those are the opening lines of the first trailer for the new Star Wars movie, Episode VII: “The Force Awakens.” This film, set to release on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, has been the subject of controversy since its announcement. No longer directed or written by George Lucas, J.J. Abrams steps up to the plate to take both places, along with co-writing with Lawrence Kasdan. In addition to writing and directing changes, Disney now has control of the Star Wars franchise, a partnership some support and others detest.

The trailer doesn’t show us a ton, but enough to keep fans interested: stormtroopers troopin’, starships flying through space and shooting lasers at each other and a swanky new lightsaber design. This is all under a dramatic monologue and, of course, at the end of the trailer the famous “Star Wars” theme begins to play as the logo shows. (Side note: bless the fact that John Williams is writing the score for this movie like he did the originals.)

I don’t know how diehards will like the movie, besides that some will love it and others will want to stab it with a lightsaber replica. However, I am looking forward to it. While I love Disney as a company, I know that they are not always the best with everything they do, but I trust them not to jump into something as highly regarded as “Star Wars.” So far, they’ve done a great job handling Marvel, so that’s a good sign.

Kasdan helped write Star Wars movies before, so he is a trustworthy fellow, but I do have my hesitations about Abrams. He directed the Star Trek reboot movies, which, while awesome, had an extreme overdosage of lens flares, unnecessary character deaths and objectification of female characters. Perhaps Abrams learned a lesson from the complaints of many fans about these movies, but time will tell.

What I’m really excited for is seeing the vast world and characters of Star Wars with the better special effect capabilities that we have now. Higher definition, more believable planets and space battles are parts of this film I am pretty darn interested in. As long as the movie doesn’t go overboard with CGI, the new technological capabilities that moviemakers have nowadays will help make it great.

Predictions aside, it still seems pretty early to have a definite stance either way on the outcome of the film. I will be on the lookout for newer trailers and info as its release gets closer, and I hope it turns out amazing.
