Being me and being free: that’s my prerogative

As of late I’ve been feeling a little like Bobby Brown. No, I don’t feel the need to do drugs and constantly fight with Whitney Houston, but I want to be my own person.

“Everybody’s talking all this stuff about me. Why don’t they just let me live?” Brown said in his song “My Prerogative.”

I’m sure a lot of people are feeling like Bobby. Why is it so hard for people to just let others live their lives without constantly being badgered about every aspect of who they are?

As a girl of the skinny persuasion why is that I must be tormented because of my genetics? I can’t help it that I’m skinny, and to tell the truth, I wouldn’t change it for the world, it fits me. It’s not my fault that some women are of bigger proportions. If you don’t like your body weight, change it. It’s as simple as that.

This is not a one way street though. Skinnier individuals can be real witches with a B minus the W. What gives us the right to tease more voluptuous women? We as women are all beautiful in different weights, shapes and sizes. No one size is better than another. Jennifer Hudson was still a picturesque woman when she a was couple pounds heavier, and she is still now that she’s a few pounds lighter.

It hurts to know that you can’t just be yourself without being tauted everyday of your waking life. Instead of putting people down, why don’t we applaud them for having the nerve to just be who they are despite what is seen as flaws in their body image and personality?

Body image aside, let’s think mentally not physically. The mind is a beautiful thing so why should I waste it thinking your thoughts and using it to form your words instead of my own? People have a problem realizing that not everyone is going to think or act like them. We are all individuals with free will.

On things such as religion, sexuality and race, we need to just learn to agree to disagree not everyone is going to have the same views. People of color aren’t going to bleach themselves and Caucasians aren’t going to dye themselves. Homosexuals aren’t going to be heterosexual, while heterosexuals aren’t going start playing for the other team. We are all different, we are all human, and that just isn’t going to change time soon so learn to accept it.

If I decide tomorrow that I want to dye my hair purple, pierce every possible part of my body, and tattoo “Individualism Junkie” on my forehead, I can.

Once again quoting Brown: “I don’t need permission; make my own decisions. That’s my prerogative.”
