To continue activities for mayhem week, activities director David Ewers participated in his final pep assembly on Friday, May 1. Ewers, who will be the new athletics director at Shawnee Mission North High School, judged the final lip-sync competition which has become a tradition for each pep assembly.

“[Leaving Mill Valley] is obviously hard. [Pep assemblies] are fun and I think the kids get really into them,” Ewers said. “I have a fun time doing whatever I can to help out. I’m sad it’s my last one for sure.”

During his time at Mill Valley, Ewers has played a large role in the production of assemblies by both speaking and participating.

“Mr.Ewers [is] such an important part of our pep assemblies,” sophomore Brady Rolig said. “He has really made them memorable, but there is no doubt [StuCo] will still continue to provide good school spirit.”

According to junior Abbie Hughes, StuCo will “definitely feel Ewers’ absence next year.”

Although technical difficulties with music disqualified the juniors from the lip-sync battle between each class, Ewers was still able to lighten the mood as much as he could to end the assembly on a high note.

“Mr. Ewers is a great representation of Mill Valley,” Hughes said. “He adds to the overall smoothness of assemblies and makes them much more enjoyable for students and student council.”

Following the seniors performance, members of the junior class proceeded to lead the school in exiting the gym as a frustrated response to the junior’s disqualification. The exit of the student body from the assembly disallowed Ewers to lead the school in ‘Hey, Hey one last time.

Freshman Trey Callahan called the junior’s response “poor sportsmanship.”

With a negative backlash, Ewers stresses the importance of enjoying opportunities like pep assemblies while still in high school.

“Don’t be in such a hurry to get out of high school. Once you graduate and enter the ‘real world,’ there are a lot more things you have to be accountable for,” Ewers said. “As a high school kid you should relax and have fun. So enjoy it because it’s one of those things you might look back on and you might miss it.”
