Week five: actors and set crew “come together” during Homecoming week

Homecoming week has been quite a blast for all of us in the drama department.  A variety of events have happened so far this week.  There was no rehearsal Monday, Oct. 3 due to the choir concert, and Tuesday, Oct. 4 was the first run through of act one.  Final casts have not been decided yet, but the director placed us in ways he thinks work well together.

“I want to place the actors in groups that have good chemistry,” director Jon Copeland said.  “Each cast will be unique and give the audience an opportunity to see two completely different shows.”

On Tuesday, Oct. 4 the cast ran through act one with characters Copeland wanted working together.

During this eventful week, Wednesday Oct. 5 was the Homecoming parade, and that meant craziness for the cast of the Wizard of Oz.  At 3:30 p.m., the poppy dancers met in the theater to learn a new dance while set crew and others worked on the parade float.  Practice was done by 5 p.m. and those practicing scenes met outside with the float decorators to finish decorating.  With sugar flowing through their veins, the kids got to work on creating advertisements to show off to the parade spectators.

“We want to get as much word out to the public as we can,” senior Kylie Pfannenstiel said.  “It’s going to be a huge show.”

As big as this show is going to be, many students have approached the director and asked for extra performances to be added.  We have gathered signatures, and Copeland has talked with assistant principal Jennifer Smith about adding extra dates.  We still do not know for sure if we are adding dates.  If added, shows on Saturday, Nov. 5 and Monday, Nov. 7.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, we will be running act one again, but with a different cast.  Leads that practiced Tuesday, Oct. 4 will now be performing their secondary characters and give their double the chance to act as the lead.

Do you like the idea of double casting?  Post your ideas in the comments section below.  Next week will be interesting as we will be running through act two.  Keep checking back every Thursday for updates from the Oz blog.
