Volunteer opportunity allows student to donate time and skill

Since September of 2011, junior Alexis Miller has been donating her time to volunteer at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Miller volunteers every Thursday in the Women’s Health department. She has accumulated over 100 total service hours.

“It’s a rewarding feeling giving back to the community,” Miller said.

Miller does a variety of tasks in the department such as filling out and filing paperwork for patients.

“Sometimes you meet some really cool people,” Miller said.

In addition to helping others, the job also has other perks.

“Sometimes I eat the cafeteria food,” Miller said. “They have really good mac and cheese and cookies. The coffee is ‘eh.’”

Miller chose to volunteer at the hospital because she hopes to pursue a career in the medical field.

“Well, I guess I watch a lot of House,” Miller said. “But really, my mom’s a nurse and I want to be able to help other people.”
