Volleyball defeats Turner High School on Tuesday, Sept. 13

The varsity volleyball team communicates often during their games. Whenever sophomore Molly Oshinski thinks she can get another point on the board, she yells “Shoot!” and sophomore Hannah Billings sets the ball to her. When the other team can’t get the ball back over the net, the crowd goes wild with excitement.

The team played against Turner High School on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

The first game was a victory for the team. Although there were quite a few missed hits and serves going out of bounds, they made up for it with senior MacKenzie Acree’s strong serves and hits, which almost always resulted in a point.

The younger volleyball players were cheering on the team the entire time. They made a poster for each player with the their name and jersey number. Every time the team scored a point, the younger players would yell “Let’s go Jags!”

“[I like to cheer because] when you cheer [the team] on, they have hope that they can win and will play better,” freshman Hannah Phipps said.

Sophomore Abby Ford had multiple saves in the second game. Sophomore Taylor Cowan also contributed with strong hits. Although they had missed hits and serves, the team still managed to be ahead at 23-15. When Turner failed to return the ball, Oshinski scored the winning point by hitting the ball over the net.

To start off the third game, senior Brittany Zarda made a kill over the net, resulting in a point for the Lady Jags. About halfway through the game, freshman Maddie Little racked up points on the scoreboard. Towards the end, a rally ensued until a strong hit from Oshinski broke the trend by earning a point for the team. The Jags won the game 25-19.

Ultimately, the team won 3-0 sets against Turner High School.

Acree thought improvements could have been made during the game.

“We could have done better, but I’m glad we got another win on the record,” Acree said.

The team will next be in action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 against Tonganoxie High School.
