Three spirit buses filled with students traveled to the Topeka Expocentre on Thursday, March 12 to watch the boys basketball team take on the Maize South Mavericks in the first round of the state tournament. The Jaguars fell to the Mavericks 60-52.

About 300 students either drove themselves or rode the spirit buses in order to watch the game.

“Our car ride was really awesome. We jammed to … rap jams [during the drive] and it was fun,” senior Morgan McLeroy said.

Junior Lucas Krull, who tended to lead the student section in chants during games throughout the season, said the experience will be a highlight of his junior year.

“Just making noise and the comeback probably [was my favorite part],” Krull said. “It’s something I don’t want to miss out in my high school career; it’s fun and it’s awesome to bring the school together like this.”

Despite the team’s loss, McLeroy enjoyed team’s ability to unify the school and its students.

“My favorite part was the student section and how it really brought our school together,” McLeroy said. “It was hard [to see them lose] but we still love our boys and they’ve done an awesome job this season, so we’re still proud of them.”
