Student tech Zachary Botkin gains skills through his internship

Botkin’s student internship position helps with information technology and real-life skills

JAG: Why did you decide to be a student tech?

Zachary Botkin: I thought it would be a good opportunity to get into the [information technology] field and help other kids and students around the building with new technology.

J: What is your favorite part about being a student tech?

ZB: I like helping students and teachers with their technical problems and get experience in IT.

J: What is one thing you want students, teachers and parents to know about the Macbooks?

ZB: There are some interesting programs already installed that are pretty useful. I think the grapher programs are pretty useful for math classes. You can do so much on [the Macs] so just look around.

J: What is one lesson or thing you have learned by being a student tech?

ZB: I would say a combination of interpersonal skills, like speaking with people, and just other troubleshooting tips for helping people with their computers and explaining to them how they work.

J: What does an average day as a student tech look like?

ZB: I check tickets, which are what teachers submit whenever they have a problem. Then, I look at them and either escalate them to a higher authority if I cannot fix it myself or I go to other people and try to fix it. Throughout the day, teachers will either call down or students will come down with problems and we’ll fix it.
