Student tech Collin Mckinnon helps students and teachers get a hang of the new MacBooks

Mckinnon takes this opportunity to learn new technology and people skills

JAG: Why did you decide to be a student tech?

Collin McKinnon: I decided to do it in case I ever wanted to go into the tech field in college, it would help me learn some of the basics of helping people out and [fixing common problems].

J: What’s your favorite part about being a tech?

CM: The fact that I can sit here, relax, and meet more students, and get to know teachers better through the program.

J: Who are some of the teachers you feel like you’ve gotten to know better?

CM: It’s a little early to say right now, but I definitely feel like [the] list will grow.

J: What do you personally think about us having MacBooks?

CM: I think it’s definitely an interesting step. I do think that there were a few hitches in the system when it comes down to it, but that’s just part of changing and that’s part of life, but I think over all the MacBooks for every student was a smart idea?

J: How do you feel about them coming in your senior year?

CM: Although I only get to use [the MacBooks] for a year, it will probably be for the better because if I’m going off to college and I’ve got to choose a laptop to take with me at that point I might as well just choose a Mac because I’ve used it for a whole year.

J: What is one thing you want students or parents to know about the MacBooks?

CM: They are relatively secure, and if you violate any of the terms there will be proper punishments. [Also] that the Macs are user friendly so anyone can get to use them. They’re not hard to learn if you’ve got to pick it up as a parent and look through your student’s grades or something.

J: What is one lesson you’ve learned by being a tech?

CM: Definitely that patience is key, and that helping people is not always the easiest thing.

J: Do you have any funny stories yet this year?

CM: I think that the best story we’ve had is the “my Mac won’t play through airplay” and then all we did was click the button and it airplayed. It’s just those simple mistakes that makes it funny.
