StuCo holds a First Friday to start homecoming week

Students and staff enjoyed live music, donuts and original artwork

The homecoming theme this year is “I Love Kansas City,” and to start off the spirit week, StuCo held a mock First Friday before school on Friday, Sept. 1. First Fridays are a widely-known Kansas City tradition where people from the surrounding area gather to view artwork, enjoy live music and sample food.

Artwork from students and faculty members hung on the walls of the main hallway, StuCo members handed out donuts to viewers and live music could be heard from student and staff performers. Junior Eve Steinle thought the event was successful overall and favors the artwork portion.

“I thought [the event] was pretty cool and the artwork was really good,” Steinle said. “I liked seeing the different artwork that I wouldn’t have been able to see without [First Friday.]

According to student body secretary Hannah Barnes, the theme and date were perfectly matched, making it a great opportunity to hold the event.

“We wanted to incorporate a really big tradition in Kansas City, and it lined up perfectly with homecoming week,” Barnes said. “It allowed us to have an extra spirit day to make up for the lost day next week.”

Barnes also believes First Friday was an example of why Mill Valley has a distinct environment.

“[First Friday] is unique,” Barnes said. “I’ve never heard of another school incorporating their city and it makes it more personal because a lot of our students go down and have ties back to Kansas City.”

Steinle agrees the event was special and thinks it sets a good tone for the rest of homecoming week.

“It’s a good way to start [homecoming week] off because we’re not just waking up and getting dressed,” Steinle said. “We’re seeing the school get transformed.”
