Seven questions with English teacher Dorothy Swafford

How was your summer?

My summer went by great. I went to Branson with the family, and I’ve just been focused on spending time with the kids and getting ready for the next new addition to the family.

You’re expecting a child soon, do you know the gender, and do you have any names picked out?

We’re going to have a boy, and we have decided on ‘Jackson Dean’. My husband came up with it, I thought I’d humor him. I got to name the other ones, so I thought he should have full rights.

You have become known for your interesting phrases used in class, your “Swaff-isms”, if you will. How do you come up with them?

When I think back to my favorite teachers, I think of how funny they were. They always had a great sense of humor, and that’s become a part of me, just being witty and fun.

What are you excited for this year?

I’m always excited for new challenges in school, and I love all the new students. I just love students. Outside of school, I’m excited for meeting the new baby, and adding onto our family. Only three months away.

Being an English teacher, you’ve surely got a favorite book of all time, or just some recommendations to students?

Hmm, that’s a tough one. I really love Why the Caged Bird Sings, and To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m also a big fan of Nora Roberts, she’s a really good mystery romance writer.

What’s your favorite performance you’ve seen live?

That’s another tough one. I saw Rent on Broadway which was really cool. Bon Jovi was awesome, Def Leppard was awesome, I’m not sure.

What is your favorite color?

Black and White. I know they’re kinda boring, but somewhat fitting too.
