Science students take field trip to Washburn University for Chemistry Day

Select students attended Chemistry Day at Washburn University in Topeka on Thursday, Apr. 4. Science teachers Jennifer Aytes and Mary Beth Mattingly chose eight students from their Chemistry classes to participate in the day. The team started out touring the lab rooms with undergraduate and graduate students who attend Washburn. They then took a 90-minute written exam and followed with a game called ChemBowl.

Aytes said that the day went how she expected it and that she enjoyed the field trip.

“I was very impressed with how the day went,” Aytes said. “I thought that Washburn put together the day well and the kids also enjoyed being in that atmosphere.”

Four of the eight students attending placed first out of the six schools.

“It was a good day and all of the students seemed to enjoy it,” Aytes said. “They also got to tour some of the science department facilities and saw Washburn students demonstrate how to use some of the laboratory equipment and learn about the chemistry programs at Washburn.”
