The rock climbing club began their first practice on February 25th, 2025. The club practices at a rock climbing gym called RoKC in Olathe every Monday and Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The club was founded by junior Maddox Niedzwiecki, who rock climbed for two years before starting the club.
“There was no one that really rock climbed in the gym my age, so I wanted to find more rock climbers around my age,” Niedzwiecki said.
Enjoying the extra activity, sophomore Lenna Hansen explains why she was keen on joining the club.
“I have been interested in it for a while, but never really got into it,” Hansen said. “I saw there was a club, so I thought I would give it a try .It’s an easy way to get active, and it’s fun to try and improve and do harder climbs.”
Sophomore Calder Hsu joined the club as a fun alternative to going to the gym and staying fit and active.
“You’re competing against yourself, so it’s good for self-improvement,” Hsu said. “I get to hug plastic rocks, like a tree hugger but with a wall.”
Hansen explains the relationship between Niedzwiecki and his members, offering insight on how they interact and connect.
“We practice climbing with Maddox,” Hansen said. “He works there, so he likes to give us some tips on how we can improve.”
Consisting of only nine members, the club is looking to recruit new members. Niedzwiecki would recommend to all students to try rock climbing at least once.
“It’s fun for a hobby and it’s also good exercise,” Niedzwiecki said. “It’s unique and special, even if you want to try it once.”
