New teacher science teacher moves classrooms after working at Mill Valley for only two years

Scott Poertner taught at Bonner Springs for 22 years before coming to teach at Mill Valley

Mill Valley News: What did you do before you came to MV? 

Scott Poertner: I taught at Bonner Springs for 22 years and I still live there. 

MVN: Can you describe something in your room or desk that means something to you?

SP: This rock was given to me by my kids. I have always just had it. 

MVN: What are some of your goals for Mill Valley?

SP: One of my goals for Mill Valley is to learn about Mill Valley and be a part of the community.

MVN: What do you like to do in your free time?

SP: In my free time, I like to travel a little bit, spending time in a group and just hanging out. 

MVN: What was your favorite subject when you were in school? 

SP: My favorite subject when I was in school was chemistry.

MVN: Why?

SP: I just enjoyed chemistry and I got a degree in it.

MVN: So what were your first impressions of everybody at Mill Valley? 

SP: My first impressions of everybody were good. Mill Valley seems like a good community. 

MVN: Why did you choose to come to Mill Valley to teach?

SP: I came to work at Mill Valley because a friend of mine actually worked here that used to teach with me at Blue Springs. He told me he was leaving so I took his job when he left.

MVN: Why did you want to get into teaching?

SP: I got into teaching because a lot of my family members taught. It was in the family.

MVN: What do you enjoy about teaching?

SP: I just like to interact with the kids. It’s fun. It’s fun teaching kids how to do things especially when they learn how to do it.

MVN: Which college did you go to?

SP: I went to Missouri Southern and I got my bachelor’s degree there and then I went to the University of Central Missouri.

MVN: What did you major or minor in at college?

SP: I majored and minored math, chemistry, and education during college.

MVN: What are you looking forward to attending at Mill Valley?

SP: I’m looking forward to attending sports and games. I am going to try to get to some soccer games. I’m looking forward to football games but I haven’t been to a football game yet.
