Academic letter award ceremony approaching

The counseling department will invite students and their family members to attend the annual academic letter award ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. in the main gym. The goal of the ceremony is to recognize the academic achievements of students who have performed highly.

Students who maintained an unweighted GPA of 3.7 or higher for the past two consecutive semesters will have earned a letter. The counseling department encourages all letter award winners to attend. Letters were sent out to students last week letting them know whether or not they earned a letter. There is also a list posted outside the counseling office.

There is no required dress code, but it the counseling department suggests that students dress nicely, as they will be recognized in front of their peers, family members and teachers.

This year, the awards will be distributed in order of third-year winners, second-year winners and first-year winners, as opposed to by grade level like in the past. The awards will be given out by teacher representatives from the communication arts, science and social studies departments, instead of administrators, like in the past. The ceremony will include a speech from social studies teacher Jeff Wieland and a performance by the Jazz Band.

The counseling department hopes to make this year’s ceremony a more formal event. It will also be distributing programs for students and parents to keep as souvenirs to remember the occasion.

Students who do not attend can receive their letters in the counseling office after the ceremony.

Correction: An earlier version of this post included the wrong date for the academic letter award ceremony. The correct date is Tuesday, Sept. 29, not Sept. 27.
