The marching band received the highest ranking, a one, at the Emporia State University marching competition on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The marching show was superhero themed and included the themes from “Captain America,” the original“Batman” and “Spiderman”.

Senior drum major Kaia Minter said she was caught off guard by the rating.

“Everything prior to competition day made me think that we wouldn’t get a one,” Minter said. “When we did I was so excited that I cried.”

Band director Deb Steiner, however, said she was not surprised.

“There are several things that went really well during competition day so I had a feeling [getting a one] might happen,” Steiner said.

Despite being pleased with the band’s score, the band has not perfected the show, according to Steiner.

“Some of our steps were off and we can always work on being more musical,” Steiner said. “There’s always room for improvement.”
