Luxury Cruise Liner runs aground, capsizes near Tuscan island

The luxury cruise liner Costa Concordia ran into rocks near an island off the coast of Italy Friday, Jan. 13, eventually capsizing onto its starboard side.

The ship was guided within 800 feet of the island by Capt. Francesco Schettino. Schettino is under scrutiny for leaving the ship while passengers were still on board and faces charges for manslaughter, shipwreck, and abandoning ship while passengers continued to evacuate. He remains under house arrest.

Reports say that the crew of the Costa Concordia provided no assistance to passengers attempting to evacuate, and some were even seen chatting and joking nonchalantly as the ship began to turn onto its side.

Eleven people have been confirmed dead and more than two dozen are still missing. However, president of Lifeguard Systems Butch Hendrick doesn’t believe there will be any more survivors found, according to CNN.

“I’m sorry to say this, but I don’t – I don’t believe there are. I’m sorry,” Hendrick said.

Searches have been stopped and restarted several times since the wreck as worries have arisen that the ship has become unstable and may shift while rescue scuba divers are inside.
