Freshman Devonte Smith competes in the long jump event at the Lansing Split on Tuesday, March 8.

With a team composed of mainly junior varsity members, the boys track team placed seventh and the girls track team placed ninth at the varsity Lansing Invitational on Tuesday, April 8.

Assistant coach Betsy Meeks said competing at this varsity meet was a good opportunity for the JV members of the team.

“It’s a challenge for [the junior varsity members], but it’s a good challenge because it gives them times to shoot for and it allows them to see how they stack up against the varsity,” Meeks said. “It was also a good meet for us because it was the first JV meet. They’ve practiced for a while so it was good for them to finally get to compete.”

Junior Teddy Gillespie, who placed first in two events, said the JV members competed well against the varsity teams.

“I think that it was a good meet; it was a varsity meet and most of the people we sent were [JV],” Gillespie said. “From that viewpoint it went very well. We had a lot of people place in the top six which is really good when it’s your JV at a varsity meet. It shows you have depth as a squad.”

Gillespie said the team’s performance at this meet shows that the team has a good possibility of doing well at future meets, including league.

“It shows that our track teams are very solid all around and will be good for years to come,” Gillespie said. “I also think it’s a good sign because a lot of the teams there are the teams we compete against at league, so it shows that we have a good chance of doing well at league, not only this year, but in the future.”
