Girls tennis wins their first duel against Olathe North
Girls tennis starts the season off winning 6-3 at home
September 2, 2015
The girls tennis team won their first duel 6-3 against Olathe North on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The duel ended with a score of 2-1 in doubles and 4-2 in singles.
Being the first match of the season senior Paige Wiebe and her doubles partner junior Lauren Tracht experienced some early challenges.
“I think the season started out great. We worked really well together; we played great rallies,” Wiebe said. “I’m not even that mad we lost because our rallies were amazing and we had awesome points. I think it was a great start.”
At the end of a tough back and forth, doubles team seniors Sally Carey and Katie Burke won their match 8-6.
“We started [our match] really well. We were winning, 5-1 then we got sloppy because we were tired and kind of cocky,” senior Sally Carey said. “They started catching up but we pulled our stuff together and came back on top with a win.”
Head coach Abby Teetsel is happy with the team’s performance in their first matches. This is her first year coaching at the high school level. Although the top of the latter took a hit, she is excited about the returning talent.
“I think [our first duel] went pretty well. Olathe North has really good number one and number two singles and doubles players and that’s where we really struggled,” Teetsel said. “Otherwise we were really able to capitalize on our deep team and I think we definitely had greater depth than they did.”
