Girls tennis team competes in the Gardner Invitational

On Tuesday, Sept. 13 the tennis team traveled to Gardner Edgerton High School to compete in the annual Gardner Invitation. Representing Mill Valley High School’s top singles, senior Hillary Rupp played in Pool A where she struggled and lost her three matches 8-0, 8-3, and 8-0.

Later in the tournament, the second best singles player, freshman Mikaela McCabe competed. McCabe won her first match 8-4 lost in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-4), won her next match 8-5, and then played in the third place match against Lindsey Howard of Lawrence Free State High School and won a bronze medal.

Then the tournament switched from singles to doubles where junior Sarah Wetzel and senior Kelli Rutherford played in the top doubles tournament. The two lost their three matches 8-6, 8-4, and 8-2.

The number two doubles teams tournament started shortly after and juniors Taylor Brunson and Joylyn Kennedy won their first match 8-3, won their second in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-5), and lost their third 8-3. Since the two went two and one in their pool they went on to play in the third place match against Brooke Fox and Alyssa Raye of Lawrence Free State. The two teams played, and Brunson and Kennedy won and recieved yet another bronze medal for the team.
