The girls soccer team won its first game of the season on Tuesday, March 29, beating Olathe North 2-0.

“Since it was our first game, we still have stuff to work on, but we worked hard this past month in practice and we’re really excited,” senior outside midfielder Emma Wetzel said. “We finished what we wanted to accomplish.”

Although Olathe North played aggressively, the the team kept momentum up by continuously moving the ball on the field, resulting in two goals from seniors Kennedy Hoffman and Kaylee Chapman.

“I think we did a better job of passing around and playing physical,” Wetzel said. “This was a really physical team, so we had to match their intensity otherwise it wouldn’t have gone well.”

The team has been preparing for the season over the past few weeks, and junior center midfielder Haley Freeman attributed their first win to their tenacity in practices.

“We’re working a lot on defending and working a lot on possession, playing one and two touch, looking up, and talking to each other,” Freeman said.

Freeman said the work team members have put in led to success on the field both offensively and defensively.

“It was really fast paced and we had to adjust a lot, but I think our defense was really good considering that [Olathe North] barely got any shots off,” Freeman said. “Our offense was really good because we had a lot of opportunities.”

Despite the win, Wetzel said players are still looking to improve over the course of the season and are ready to take on new challenges.

“We want to take it one game at a time,” Wetzel said. “We just want to continue each game and win each game as the season goes along.”
