On Saturday, Oct. 23, the boys and girls cross country teams ran at the “St. James Invitational” for regionals. The girls finished in second place, securing their spot at state while the boys finished in fourth place, having two individual state qualifiers, senior Chase Schieber and sophomore AJ Vega.

As a returning member of the state team, senior Bridget Roy reflected on how the girls performed during the race.

“I was proud of how well all of the girls and I got out fast,” Roy said. “We had set goals of going out as a pack and setting the pace and we did a great job at accomplishing that. With such a small field, the gaps between runners develop so much quicker, so being on the front side of the field really helped us qualify for state.”

Head cross country coach Chris McAfee is satisfied with how both teams performed and believes that both of the teams performed to the best of their ability.

“As a coach, you hope the athletes and teams race up to their potential and we feel that overall we were able to achieve that.” McAfee said. “Sometimes a team or teams are better than you, but all we can control is how we do. We were proud of the teams and our seniors for their leadership.”

Though the state meet is only days away, Roy is excited to spend time with her teammates, even when they are not training.

“The state meet is [Saturday,] October 30, and it is in Wichita again this year,” Roy said. “This week we are going to focus on preserving our bodies, and really getting that extra recovery before the state championships. We are also spending quality time as a team at team outings and pasta dinners, and just soaking in this fun time and all the festivities that come with it. We are excited to get out there and show the state of Kansas what we’ve got.”
