Girls basketball team stays positive after two losses

The girls basketball team has lost its first two games against Blue Valley Northwest High School, 38-49 and Gardner-Edgerton High School, 38-48.

Head coach John McFall knows it’s only the beginning of the season for the team.

“We’re in the early part of the season, both of the teams we’ve played were pretty good so I wouldn’t say our first two games haven’t gone well,” McFall said.

Senior guard Kati Strickland thinks focusing on rebounds will help the team.

“Generally the other team is bigger than us and we can’t get rebounds,” Strickland said. “We need to improve on rebounding because we’re a smaller team this year.”

Both McFall and Strickland believe hard work will be beneficial.

“They compete and play hard, they battled [against Gardner] when we were down 17 at one point,” McFall said. “If you’re down 17 and come back to take the lead they haven’t given up.”

Strickland knows staying focused even after a loss is important.

“We come back to practice the next day ready to work, focused and we fix problems from previous games,” Strickland said.

McFall expects with the team’s hard work, good things will happen.

“The whole idea is that you improve everyday,” McFall said. “As long as you continue to work and improve good things will happen.”

The next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 13 against Bonner Springs High School at 6 p.m.
