Geek Guru: Time for Apple fans to break into their emergency savings

After being sick for far too long (and still suffering from some sniffles), it seems one thing can, for sure, summon the Geek Guru to return: Apple announcements. The technology company’s “Spring Forward” event on Monday, March 9 expanded upon news about the Apple Watch, introduced a new MacBook and revealed that the HBO Go program will debut on Apple devices (this was done along with a trailer for “Game of Thrones” season 5, much to my liking).

One of the new features for the Apple Watch includes taking a call straight from the watch itself. My main thought in response to this is: those “Power Rangers” communicator watches are now real. If answering phone calls with your wristwatch isn’t the most stereotypical futuristic concept imaginable (outside of sending astronauts to Mars), I’m not sure what else is. Apple also showed off a few other apps, like the ESPN app to check scores, Apple Pay to purchase things with your watch, Twitter and Instagram. The watch can also be used as a hotel room key, though Disney’s MagicBands beat Apple to the punch on that one.

However amazingly futuristic the device may sound, there is one big deal-breaker: it is quite expensive. Of course, I expect this from Apple, but wearing something worth so much money on your wrist is a frightening idea. The Sport version starts at $349, the stainless steel version at $549 and the Apple Watch edition starts at $10,000. I love technology, but please, if you have $10,000 to spend that you want to throw down on a cool wristwatch, I beg you to reconsider and send that to a charity.

For the same price as the luxury Apple Watch edition of the watch, you could buy just over seven and a half new MacBooks, which were the other big announcement of the night. Dubbed the “most efficient notebook,” they have an estimated full battery life of a whole day, pressure-sensitive touch pads and are 24 percent thinner than the current MacBook Air. It weighs only 2 pounds, which might be heavier than my laptop case for my current MacBook Pro. On one hand, that is convenient, but on the other hand, I feel like I might accidentally snap it in half. However, I will definitely be paying close attention to this notebook, as it may very well be one I invest in for college.

Other reveals included an Apple TV price drop, an app called ResearchKit to help doctors with diagnoses and iOS 8.2. You can watch the whole event here, and if you want to relive the original Apple Watch announcement, you can read about that on my very first Geek Guru post here. (Oh, the nostalgia.) That’s it — and have a great spring break.
