Receiving a trophy, the Jaguars earn the title District Champions after their game against the Turner Bears on Friday, Oct. 31. They end the regular season with a record of 5-4.

After a 59-28 win over the Turner Bears, the football team will return to playoffs after losing in the second round of playoffs to Blue Valley last season.

The Jaguars outscored the Bears 28-7 in the first quarter, holding them to zero points until the last minute of the half.

Senior offensive lineman Evan Applegate thinks the team is in a good place going into playoffs.

“I think both sides of the ball played really well,” Applegate said.  “The last two games have been great and we’re playing our best football going into this [Friday].”

The first points of the game came from a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Logan Koch to junior wide reciever Christian Jegen. The extra point by junior kicker Andrew Hicks was good, giving the Jaguars a 7-0 lead with 5:24 to play in the first quarter.

After a turnover-on-downs by the Bears, Koch threw to junior wide receiver Lucas Krull for the Jaguar’s second touchdown of the night. After another successful extra point by Hicks, the Jaguars brought their lead to 14-0 to end the first quarter.

Touchdown carries by both Krull and senior running back Isaiah Young in the second quarter, and two good extra point attempts by Hicks added 14 points to the scoreboard to give the Jaguars a 28-0 lead.

To end the first half, the Bears scored a touchdown, making the score 28-7.

Even with a strong lead at halftime, the Jaguars knew they had to keep working hard to be victorious.

“We knew they weren’t going to lay down and die for us, so we needed to go out there and keep putting points on the board,” Applegate said.

34 points were scored within eight minutes to begin the second half. The Jaguars began this scoring run with a 20-yard touchdown run by Koch. The extra point by Hicks was good, extending the Jaguars lead to 35-7 with 11:15 to play in the third quarter.

Following the kickoff, the Bears ran 50 yards for a touchdown to make the score 35-13, with a failed extra point.

With 9:33 to play in the third quarter, Koch ran for his second touchdown of the night. The extra point by Hicks was good giving the Jaguars a 42-13 lead.

Within the next 20 seconds, the Jaguars recovered a fumble by the Bears, and Jegen ran 20 yards for a touchdown. Hicks’ extra point attempt was successful to bring the score to 49-13 with 9:16 to play in the third quarter.

A fumble by the Jaguars led to a fumble recovery by the Bears, ran in for a touchdown to make the score 49-20.

To end the game, each team added an additional touchdown to the scoreboard making the final score 59-28, Jaguars.

The team will play the Pittsburg High School Purple Dragons in Regionals on Friday, Nov. 7 at home at 7 p.m. A win would put the Jaguars in Sectionals against the winner of the Lansing/Shawnee Heights game.

“It’s a weird feeling knowing that any game might be your last and you don’t know when it’s going to end,” Applegate said. “We just go out there and give it our all … and enjoy the last few games.”
