At least 73 people were killed and hundreds injured after riots broke out in a Port Said, Egypt soccer stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Officials say it is the worst sports-related disaster in Egypt’s history. 

Violence erupted when fans of al-Masry, Port Said’s soccer team, rushed onto the field after a victory over rival squad Al Ahli. The fans chased team members of Al Ahli and threw various objects at opposing fans and players.

Premier league matches have been halted indefinitely while the riots are being investigated.

“This is unfortunate and deeply saddening. It is the biggest disaster in Egypt’s soccer history,” deputy health minister Hesham Sheiha said, according to Reuters.

Violence involving soccer clubs in Egypt has greatly increased since protests and political unrest began more than a year ago.

An emergency session will be held by Egypt’s Football Association Executive Committee to decide whether or not to cancel the remainder of the season.
