DECA starts their season strong with an ice cream social and meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3. This served as a short informational meeting for any students who were interested in the club. Returning members and sponsor Diana Heffernon-Meyers were shocked by the great turnout of nearly 100 students interested in the club.

According to Heffernon, DECA is a professional competitive event, offered at different levels, where students will compete in four different areas: finance, marketing, business administration or entrepreneurship.

“In competition, each student will take a 100 question multiple choice test, and will participate in a role play scenario in which they are given a problem and have 10 minutes to come up with a solution to the problem to present to a judge,” Heffernon said.

“We always hope to send as many people we can to state, which is in Manhattan on March 1st, 2nd, and third this year,” Heffernon said. “The top three ranked students in [the] state are qualified to compete in nationals, which is in Nashville.”

According to senior Wyatt Lindsey, a returning DECA member, DECA is a club that creates many opportunities for students, such as scholarships and valuable experiences.

“DECA is a club that creates new skills and great connections with very knowledgeable people,” Lindsey said.

Any student interested in joining is highly encouraged to talk to Heffernon about joining the club as soon as possible.
