Olathe South hosted Sunflower League for Saturday, Feb. 4 where the team placed second. The team also came away with three individual first-place medalists with senior Eddie Hughart and juniors Dillion Cooper and Colin McAlister and two individual second-place medalists through junior Robert Hickman and freshman Christopher Wash Jr.

Junior Robert Hickman, who ended the day with a 2-1 record, explains what he liked about his second-round match. “My best match was my second match because I won it in overtime and it was just a good match,” Hickman said. “It was also my favorite match because I liked that I was getting good competition.”

Junior Dillon Cooper, who placed first overall in the 126 weight class and ended with a 4-0 record on the day, describes what he believed he did well and what he could’ve done better.

“I think I was able to chain everything together very well in all my matches,” Cooper said. “However, if I could have improved on one thing it would have been to score more points on my feet before I pinned people down.”

Hickman describes what he believed were his strengths and weaknesses from the competition.

“I believe that I was able to do a good job with defending any single leg attacks I experienced,” Hickman said. “In my final match, I struggled with getting up from the bottom so I wish I could’ve just done that a little better.”

Cooper explains what he enjoyed about his individual matches and the competition as a whole.

“My favorite and best match of the day was definitely my semifinal match because I was able to show a wide variety of offense,” Cooper said. “From the whole competition though, my favorite part was being able to cheer on my teammates.”
