The boys soccer team clinched a win over the Blue Valley West Jaguars at home on Thursday, Sept. 22, ending the game with a score of 1-0.

For the first half of the game, both teams attempted to score and take an early lead, but with no success. During a free kick, Mill Valley was able to score in the last minute of the game. Sophomore Caleb Brown scored to end the game 1-0 with help from his teammates

The team’s energy and motivation to defeat BVW contributed to the defining play that put Mill Valley on top.

“We knew that [BVW was] good. They were number two in the EKL. They had beat some of the best teams in the state and we just knew we had to come out and play hard,” sophomore Aidan Veal said. “We played well as a defensive unit. We worked really hard together and we played for each other to win.”

Due to the overwhelming student attendance and the crowd involvement, the team was able to maintain their confidence.

“With all of the energy going around, it is very intense. It naturally gives you more energy,” Brown said. “[Crowd involvement] makes it very fun. It feels really good to hear people from your school yelling from the stands.”

Junior Drake Brizendine was not intimidated by the record of the Jaguars, and knew that as a team, they could pull out a win over the opponent.

“I know that every team in the EKL is beatable. This is the mindset we had for Blue Valley West,” said Brizendine. “I knew we’d get a goal because our team fought hard. We had them on their heels all game due to our good defense and fast forwards.”

The team’s next game is at Topeka Seaman on Saturday, Sept. 24.
