After the 55th Grammy Awards, everyone had huge expectations for what The Black Keys were going to do next. The duo, comprised of lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, garnered three awards from five nominations. Their platinum album “El Camino” was nominated for Album of the Year and their song “Lonely Boy” was nominated for Record of the Year. Ever since, all eyes have been on them in anticipation of their next studio album. If the two singles they’ve released so far from the upcoming album, titled “Turn Blue,” are any indicator of the rest of the album, then it will definitely not disappoint.

A few weeks ago, the first single from “Turn Blue,” entitled “Fever,” was released. Right away, the song sounds much more modern than anything else The Black Keys have ever released. Guitars and drums are still prominent, but the band leaves behind the blues-infused garage rock they had become known for. “Fever” has a sound reminiscent of Fitz and the Tantrums meets AWOLNATION, but that blend still doesn’t describe it justly enough. The song is vocally up to par, and still contains somewhat of a guitar solo, but it’s definitely a shift from The Black Keys’ previous work.

That shift is taken even further with the album’s second single and title track, “Turn Blue.” Not as modern as “Fever,” “Turn Blue” instead has a psychedelic feel. The song is relaxed overall, with very minimal guitar, drums, keyboard and effects. Its slower nature makes it even more of a stretch for The Black Keys, especially after an upbeat and guitar-heavy album like “El Camino.”

When both singles are looked at (or rather, listened to), they seem to blur the lines of where The Black Keys wants to go with “Turn Blue.” Perhaps it will be more modern than past albums, or maybe it’ll take the path of psychedelic indie rock or maybe it will become something entirely different. Regardless, The Black Keys are switching up their sound, and so far, it’s a good change. I can’t wait to hear “Turn Blue,” which is slated to be released on Tuesday, May 13. In the meantime, I have two amazing singles from them to listen to.
